Summer Construction in USD116 - 2015

Summer is a very busy time for our public schools.  Not only do we have hundreds of staff engaged in professional development and hundreds of students in summer school for credit, for enrichment, or for extended learning, but we also have many schools getting facility upgrades.

Urbana High School:

The UHS Kitchen was last renovated in 1957.  The renovations to the serving area and kitchen began two days after graduation, and the work will continue for 18 months.  This summer focuses on demolition of walls and asbestos abatement in the old kitchen area.  The Iowa Street Entrance is closed for most of the summer, and visitors are asked to use the Tiger Lane Entrance (just to the East of the Iowa Street Door).

UHS Serving Area - IGW DesignsWhen students return in August, they will definitely notice the construction, but most of the work will not impact lunch or the use of the Commons. The North door to the Commons will have moved slightly to the West.  The kitchen will be under construction, and the food serving lines will be moved into the Commons.  Food will be prepared at UMS and brought over to UHS for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Dr. Preston L. Williams, Jr. Elementary School:

Dr. Preston L. Williams, Jr. Elementary School (formerly Prairie) is getting a major infrastructure upgrade as we prepare to install centralized HVAC systems.  Most of the work this summer is related to asbestos abatement and removing and replacing plumbing and pipes throughout the school.

The school will celebrate the unveiling of its new name on Saturday, August 8, at 1PM.  The celebration will be open to the public, and we ask you to join us as we honor former superintendent, administrator, teacher, and coach, Dr. Preston L. Williams, Jr.

Yankee Ridge Elementary School:

The windows at Yankee Ridge are being replaced in order to increase energy efficiency and fix several leakage issues.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School:

The roof over the older section of the building is being completely replaced - this work will start in July.

Thomas Paine Elementary School:

A new parent drive/drop off lane is being constructed in order to improve safety and traffic flow issues during morning and afternoon drop off and pick up times.  This work will start in mid July.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the construction, but we are glad that several of buildings are getting upgrades to improve the safety, comfort, and efficiency of our learning spaces.  If you have any questions about any of the construction projects, please feel free to contact me or post your question on our “Ask a Tiger” link on the district website.
